Art, the Artist, Ideology: The American Experience
A series of four debates organized with the Fondation des États-Unis, Paris

March 17, 24, 31 and April 7, 2005

From the very birth of the United States, art and politics have maintained a close relationship, with art playing both a propagandist and a non-conformist role. The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were marked by an adherence to nationalist ideas and the search for an identity. Then, in the 1930s, the government policies of the New Deal conferred on artists a mission of primary importance in American society. The American cultural scene of the post-war period was dominated by the issues of the Cold War. From the beginning of the 1960s, on the other hand, artists actively participated in the demands of minority communities and became involved in the debate on social inequality.

This series of conferences is aimed at a wide public (the international community at the Cité Universitaire, French students, art enthusiasts). It seeks to open the debate on the relationship between art and politics in the United States from a historical perspective through four main themes.
