«Alfred Stieglitz: From a European Avant-Garde towards an American Art»

Despite the important role which Alfred Stieglitz played in the unfolding of modern art in the US, he remains an insufficiently known figure in France. With this symposium, it is the intention to introduce Stieglitz as a complex figure, torn between his admiration for European culture and his desire to shape a specific identity for American art.Speakers are invited to reflect upon the origins of Stieglitz' mediating role between the European and the American avant-garde by tracing an intellectual and commercial context for the germination of his artistic ideas. It will also be considered how the heritage of Stieglitz' aesthetic choices, represented by the circle of artists he supported, have shaped a certain history of American 20th century art.

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) est l'un des représentants les plus emblématiques de l'art américain du XXe siècle. L'importance de son œuvre se retrouve dans sa réapparition dans la production artistique contemporaine que ce soit sous forme d'hommages cinématographiques, de scénographies théâtrales, d'évocations littéraires, mais aussi d'éditions de masse (calendriers, posters, etc.).
Ce colloque sur " l'effet Hopper " pose la question de la circulation et de la superposition d'images dans des domaines artistiques différents qui caractérisent l'art d'aujourd'hui. Ce phénomène mérite aussi une analyse de l'image en tant que dépositaire d'une mémoire collective dans laquelle s'infiltrent des contenus identitaires et nationalistes. Les lieux et les personnages peints par Hopper sont devenus des icônes de la vie américaine, bien qu'ils relèvent d'un vocabulaire très personnel. Questionner le pourquoi de la projection d'américanité sur son œuvre permet de mieux comprendre certaines relations entretenues par le public français envers une Amérique imaginaire.
