Colloquium
«Thomas Eakins (1844–1916): Painting and Masculinity»
Organized with the Musée d'Orsay, Paris

March 4, 2002

In conjunction with the Thomas Eakins retrospective exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay, the intention of this colloquium is to expose the French public to the complexity of Eakins’ art.

It is an occasion for reflecting upon new ways of thinking about art history as they have developed in American scholarship in recent years. Issues related to gender construction form an important part of recent interpretations of Eakins’ oeuvre, but they are less developed in art history as it is practiced in France.

Symposium
«Another Look at the 1930s: Beyond the New Deal»
Organized with the Université Paris 7, Interdisciplinary Center for North American Research

June 6-8, 2002

This colloquium invited scholars to examine this decade in the United States not only in terms of the New Deal and the rupture it constituted with the 1920s but also in terms of its continuity with the1920s. It also examines how cultural institutions (including museums), labor organizations, local political organizations and marketers adapted to the changed condition of the 1930s.
