This colloquium attempted to study “anti-Americanism” in French culture - its origin, its history, its transmission, the diversity of the debate and events surrounding the issue and to carry out a critical analysis of each of these aspects.

This colloquium explored the contribution of women, hitherto unrecognized, to the initial development of American photography at the turn of the century in conjunction with the exhibition “Ambassadors of Progress: Women Photographers in Paris, 1900-1901”, a collaborative effort between the Musée d'Art Américain Giverny, the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
